Interview with Sam Penner

unnamed

We are so thrilled that our darling friend, and wildly talented Interior Designer Samantha Penner from The Peak of Très Chic has chosen this month’s designer picks! I met Samantha years ago when we both hosted a  Neiman Marcus Blogger Beauty event, and I adored her instantly. It’s been so amazing watching her talent grow over the years, and we were so tickled when she agreed to be this month’s featured designer. Here’s what she had to say……

What inspires you when starting a new project?

I try to be open to inspiration at all times throughout the day- and seem to find inspiration everywhere I look, whether it be a home featured in one of my favorite shelter mags, like House Beautiful, a pin on Pinterest, or something more abstract- like the detail of a dress or a particularly beautiful bouquet of flowers. I also try my best to reference coffee table books when working on a room or look.

In the movie about your life, who would play you, and why?

I would have to go with Cameron Diaz. I am told I look like her on a regular basis, and I love how carefree and hilarious she naturally seems to be.

What is your favorite personal belonging?

My Prada Saffiano Luxe Tote. It was the best investment I’ve ever made. I have it in the Marmo Gray color, and I carry it everywhere. It holds everything, and stands the test of time. I love it!

If you could design one room, anywhere in the world, what would it be?

I’d love to design a Paris flat for a young woman. First off, I’d get to work and stay in Paris during the project. Second, I’d get to scour antique stores and furniture stores in the area, which are all so charming. And lastly, as a young woman myself, I’d love to design the perfect place for a young woman to live out her 20s fabulously.

Favorite interior design resource?

Coffee table books! That’s where I get inspired by studying the work of acclaimed designers and the details that make their work stand out. I love Barbara Berry, Katie Ridder, and Aerin Lauder’sespecially. I am hopeful Lilly Bunn will have one out before too long. Her work is so unique and inspiring.

Coffee or tea?

Coffee all the way! I am an espresso fiend. I can’t start my day without it.

Wine or cocktail?

That’s a toughie! Can I say all of the above? 😉 I love the white wine mojito at a restaurant here in Houston called Tiny Boxwoods, and that combines both! However, in my book nothing beats a glass of Peju cabernet sauvignon after a long day.

Favorite color?

I am a big fan of the blue-green color family. I especially love turquoise and sea foam.

Favorite app?

What a great question! I love finding new and useful apps. I’d have to go with Epic Fail. The app compiles real-life images submitted by users showing incredible failures. It is constantly cracking me up.

Chocolate or sugary candy?

Chocolate for sure.

Your superpower?

Sleeping in! If you let me sleep in without an alarm, I can snooze well past noon. What can I say? It’s a gift. 😉

One Room Challenge – The Reveal

Better late than never right?:)

Last week I may have completely and utterly slightly overbooked myself, so our little One Room Challenge got neglected a bit.  Not to worry, our day has finally come to reveal Butter’s big boy room.   For those of you just tuning in, Linda from Calling it Home organizes this little endeavor twice a year, for bloggers to transform 1 room, in 6 weeks. I learned about the competition days before it started, so yeah, this was done with very little pre-planning.

Alrighty, here goes nothing:)

Let’s remember the enchanted forest nightmare where we started…

One Room Challenge – Week 4

Well, there’s no turning back now. When faced with the daunting task before them, my painting team bailed.  I supposed when they are working for free, and related to you, this shouldn’t come as a surprise.  So here’s where we stand after not 1, not 2, but THREE coats of primer to cover the Neverland ranch nightmare mural. If you’ve seen the before pictures here, you’ll notice that I could pretty much end this makeover here. What a difference so far….

What a beautiful paint mess. Remind me next time that DIY painting is wildly overrated:)  I also started putting together Butter’s bed (see below). I’ve had several of you inquisitive friends ask, “Doesn’t a big boy, need a big boy bed?” No, let’s not be crazy. If this little curly haired tornado is still willing to sleep (and STAY PUT) in his crib, I’m going to ride this wave all the way to the shore. If he wants to stay contained until his 15, I’m completely okay with that.

How amazing is this Batboys Pillowcase!!! Even cuter in person. I’m still toying with quilt options, but the J.A. Nixon Alpaca throw is really giving off the vibe I’m looking for.

So, things we STILL need to do:

Paint 2 coats of white – I decided to go with Sherwin William’s Extra White. And sadly, the ceiling needs to be painted too. The Extra White is too different from the ceiling white, so add another day of painting to the agenda:)

Set up teepee reading paradise – I’m going to need blankets, enough pillows for a pillow fight, and some more stuffed friends

Hang window treatments – after patching about a million holes in this room from the previous owners, I am in no mood to drill into it, but thus, it must be done

Finish light fixture – Thanks to my Pops, the light fixture is hung, but the rest of it needs to be assembled. FYI the Stockholm has a BILLION pieces.

Add book storage – we have tiny bookcase already in the room, but for this boy who LOVES his books, we need some additional storage

Hardware for the dresser – thinking a bronzy gold, or something a little bit more grown up than the yellow and aqua knobs he currently has

Artwork – I have admittedly given this little to ZERO thought. I may be running to Homegoods the day before the reveal:)

Ceiling – I asked the client what he wanted on his ceiling, and he had a very specific request. I’ll save it for the reveal

There are SO many amazing renovations and designs going on for #oneroomchallenge. Hit up Calling it Home, and dive right in.
